Short description
In rural areas the environment provides at least 80% of a household’s needs. A degraded and fragile ecological space is reflected in the poverty and hardships experienced by the local community, especially women. This is particularly so in drought prone regions.
WOTR mobilizes village communities in such regions to harvest rainwater wherever it falls, across the watersheds they live in. This is done by building soil and water conservation measures together with afforestation and pasture development undertaken on a ridge-to-valley basis. This is supplemented by sustainable agriculture, livestock and livelihoods development. The village communities, through their representative bodies, manage the entire project cycle –planning, implementation and post project maintenance. They are also networked into the local developmental and administrative framework and actively access public resources.
WOTR plays the role of mobiliser, enabler, capacity builder, facilitator, network and linkage builder and resource provider. It also engages with the policy establishment with a view to disseminating best practices and influencing national policies in regard to watershed development for poverty reduction.
